The Mexican Dance Ensemble of Vancouver (MDE) is British Columbia’s premier Mexican folk dance company. Founded in 2013 by acclaimed choreographer and master instructor Lourdes Ruiz, MDE is dedicated to preserving and celebrating Mexico’s rich cultural heritage through dynamic, artistically refined interpretations of traditional dance.
As a cultural bridge, we connect generations, communities, and traditions—bringing the beauty, color, and soul of Mexico to stages across Canada.
Our Mission

- Provide an inclusive, welcoming space for dancers of all backgrounds and skill levels.
- Foster cross-cultural dialogue through powerful, high-quality performances.
What We Do
- Offer Mexican folkloric dance classes for children, youth, and adults, from beginner to advanced levels.
- Produce professional stage shows, including the annual Viva la Danza, featuring over 40 dancers in full regalia.
- Participate in corporate, cultural, and educational events across Canada.
- Perform at festivals and community events, sharing the spirit of Mexico throughout British Columbia and beyond.
Notable Collaborations
MDE has had the honor of performing alongside the legendary Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán during their Canadian tour—creating a breathtaking fusion of live mariachi music and folkloric dance that captivated audiences with authenticity and artistry.

Dance Studio
Our rehearsals and classes are held in the center of Downtown Vancouver, BC at the Scotiabank Dance Centre.

Who is Lourdes Ruiz?
A Mexican Canadian folk dancer, choreographer, teacher, and founder of the Mexican Dance Ensemble of Vancouver, currently living and working on the unceded territories of the Squamish, Musqueam and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, who loves learning about history and the resilience or power of the human spirit.
